Adrift canoe in Northumberland was false alarm

Search and rescue officials say there's nothing to a report of a canoe adrift in the Northumberland Strait.

Search and rescue officials say there's nothing to a report of a canoe adrift in the Northumberland Strait.

Someone contacted the fire department in Merigomish, N.S., Wednesday night to report a canoe adrift with several people in it.

A Cormorant helicopter was brought in to help search the area east of Pictou.

The joint rescue co-ordination centre in Halifax says the caller likely mistook a fishing vessel for the canoe.

As it turns out, a herring boat was offshore at the same time and in the same location.

Searchers never found a canoe. The rescue centre says there are no reports of missing people or boats.
