4 Blockbuster stores closing
It's the end for four Blockbuster video rental stores in the Halifax area.
The four locations are closing down. Thursday is the last day to rent a video, marking the end of a weekend ritual for many people.
"I think it's sad. We always come here. It's like a Friday night staple," said Wendy Acott, dropping off a video at the Queen Street location.
Blockbuster stores on Quinpool and Herring Cove roads in Halifax and Wyse Road in Dartmouth are also shutting down.
Blockbuster was placed into receivership earlier this month. Since then, 400 stores across Canada have been in jeopardy.
Customer Rory Hancey said he believes the fees are part of the downfall.
"Initially, I think you could rent a movie for $4 or $5. That wasn't too bad. It's $6.50 plus $1 if you're 20 minutes late. You're dinged for it," he said.
For Mary Walker, it's just a sign of the times.
"A lot of people are now renting their movies online and you hear about Netflix and other promotions like that," she said.
For now, only one Blockbuster store in Halifax and two in Dartmouth will remain open.
