Yukon Quest ups prize money

After a rocky financial year for the Yukon Quest, the purse for the 2014 race will increase to $115,000. This year, it was just $100,000.

The purse for the 2014 Yukon Quest has gone up.

Mushers will compete for a total of $115,000 in prize money. This year, the purse was just $100,000.

The Quest's executive director, Marie Belanger, wishes the prize could be even bigger.

"Last year we were coming out of a very difficult financial situation so responsibly we had to cut down the purse and we didn't want to do that again," Belanger said.

"We would love to have a bigger purse but for us to remain fiscally sustainable and make sure that we keep the race going, this is where we could meet half way."

Belanger says they're looking for more sponsors and will increase the prize money if possible.

Registration for the 2014 Yukon Quest opens Saturday. The 1,600-kilometre race leaves from Fairbanks, Alaska on Feb. 1, 2014.
