The fire which destroyed the gatehouse at the Whitehorse dump is now a police arson investigation.

Fire chief Clive Sparks said their initial suspicion that someone set the fire is accurate.

"We believe that fire was deliberately set and it is a suspicious fire so we have turned the investigation over to the RCMP at this point," said Sparks.

The city continues to work toward getting a new gatehouse in place.

City public works manager Dave Muir said in a release that they expect to take possession of a new trailer Thursday. Muir said they're still trying to determine if they can repair the weigh scale, or whether it needs to be replaced.

No date has been set for re-opening the dump to the general public.
