Reaction on social media was swift to the appointment of Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo as minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and Coast Guard.

Congratulations came from Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna and Iqaluit mayor Madeleine Redfern.

Natan Obed, president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, was at the ceremony at Rideau Hall.

Hunter Tootoo's cousin, NHL hockey player Jordin Tootoo, also tweeted his congrats.

Even Greenlandic MP Sara Olsvig hailed his appointment.

Some residents of Newfoundland and Labrador were excited Tootoo got the Fisheries and Oceans portfolio.

He also found new fans in the south who are unfamiliar with his political record but love the sound of his name.

And people in Nunavut did their best to follow events online.
