Schell wins South Baffin byelection
Voters in the Nunavut communities of Cape Dorset and Kimmirut chose Fred Schell as their new MLA in a byelection Monday.
Schell, who was mayor of Cape Dorset, defeated three other candidates in the South Baffin byelection.
According to Elections Nunavut, Schell garnered 203 votes.
Adamie Nuna of Cape Dorset was the runner-up with 118 votes, followed by Joannie Ikkidluak of Kimmirut with 116 votes.
Zeke Ejesiak of Cape Dorset rounded out the race with 72 votes.
Schell succeeds outgoing MLA Olayuk Akesuk, who decided not to seek re-election this year.
While most Nunavummiut voted in their MLAs in the general election Oct. 27, a separate byelection was required in South Baffin because no one had come forward as a candidate during the general election.
