The Yellowknife chapter of the John Howard Society has a new temporary executive director: Robert Hawkins, former MLA for Yellowknife Centre.

The society fired its long-time executive director and community justice cooordinator, Lydia Bardak, on November 14.

"Yup, they have me helping them out," Hawkins confirmed by phone, declining to comment further.

Rick Alexander, the chair of the local chapter, said Hawkins started work last week.

"We have been looking into hiring somebody who can help this organization move forward, and his name is Robert Hawkins," Alexander said.

"He brings a lot to the table for the organization, a certain amount of enthusiasm and getting things back on track."

Alexander expects the society will look to permanently fill the position in mid-January. He said that process will likely include a number of candidates.
