Mint picks YK artist's work for coin
The work of a Yellowknife artist has been chosen to grace the back of a Canadian coin. Dawn Oman's work "Rising Star" is on a silver 50-cent piece issued by the Royal Canadian Mint.
It will be released in the Northwest Territories next week.
The coin honours the Great Northern Arts Festival, held every year in Inuvik.
Oman says it's the fulfillment of a dream.
"I've always just thought, 'Gee, that is just so wonderful, wouldn't it be nice if I could get something on a coin,'" Oman says. "And not like a week later, the phone rings out of the blue and it's the Canadian mint saying there's this competition, why don't you submit. And so I was really taken by surprise."
The coin will be officially unveiled at a ceremony during the Great Northern Arts Festival this summer.
