Police arrested a man early this afternoon after a nine-hour standoff at the Northern Lites Motel in downtown Yellowknife.

Yellowknife RCMP had 50 Street between 51 and 52 Avenues blocked off all Thursday morning.

Police say they responded to a call at 4:16 a.m. An RCMP news release says a male made contact with police indicating a hostage situation.

The news release describes the suspect as "armed and barricaded."

Members of the RCMP "G" Division Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation teams were on the scene.

Officers outside the building had guns drawn and police dogs on hand. An officer was negotiating with someone inside the motel over a loudspeaker.

Yellowknife RCMP spokesperson Elenore Sturko said that no one in the public was at risk.

The arrest was made just after 1 p.m. RCMP say charges are pending.
