John Ningark, former Nunavut MLA, dies at 72 in Kugaaruk
Well-known Nunavut MLA was battling cancer
A well known Nunavut politician has died.
John Ningark, who was born in Repulse Bay, passed away Thursday morning in Kugaaruk. He was 72.
His family say he has been battling cancer for the past 10 months.
Ningark served as a MLA in the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 1999. He returned to the Nunavut legislative assembly in 2009 for four more years.
"Offering my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones," Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna wrote on Twitter "He was a true champion of Nunavut."
