The only convenience store in Watson Lake, Yukon, has been destroyed by fire.

The Watson Lake fire department and RCMP were called to the Tags Foods store at about 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The town's deputy fire chief said the structure is still standing, but the store has been completely gutted.

Mayor Richard Durocher said firefighters managed to keep the nearby gas pumps cool and under control.

"Everybody is fine," he said. "Everybody performed beautifully. We’re pretty proud of our guys; they did an excellent job. We had a good turnout for it. It’s just tragic that one of the businesses in town that is key to us had been lost."

Durocher said the fire marshal's office in Whitehorse will investigate the cause of the blaze.

He said investigators will be on-site Thursday.

Durocher said the Watson Lake Tags store has been around since the 1980s.
