Burning load sparks dump fire in Hay River, N.W.T.
'The garbage truck itself was on fire,' confirms the man who works the gate at the dump
Hay River’s fire chief expects the dump to continue burning for most of today after a garbage truck arrived with its load on fire Monday afternoon.
The burning garbage was dumped on the landfill at about 1 p.m. yesterday afternoon, and the fire has been burning ever since.
“The garbage truck itself was on fire,” confirms the man who works the gate at the dump.
"He was just smoking, so when I seen him come in, I got on the phone right away with the fire department and the police. By the time I was done doing that, he went up the hill and dumped it.”
There are no fire hydrants at the landfill, so water is being trucked in, dumped in inflatable pools, and pumped onto the flames.
Helicopters are also dropping water on the fire from the air.
Officials from the department of Environment and Natural Resources were also on the scene yesterday, but were not authorized to speak to the media.
