3 men clung to ice after boat capsized

The RCMP say one man is dead after a boat struck ice and capsized near Cape Dorset, Nunavut, on Sunday.

Police say three men were heading back to the community by boat from a stone quarry. RCMP Sgt. Greg Sutherland said it was dark and foggy at the time and the boat hit a piece of ice and capsized.

"All three individuals spent several hours in the water, clinging to a piece of ice until a second boat passed by a few hours later," he said.

The rescue boat ran out of gas before they could make it to the community, or to land. They paddled to shore and one of the men ran two kilometres to town and called the RCMP.

Police arrived to find some of the men walking into town. One of the three men who had been pulled from the water was in the rescue boat in critical condition. Peter Parr, 42, was pronounced dead at the health centre.

Sutherland said the exact cause of death has not been determined.

He said the two survivors are in good condition.
