Western Newfoundland wants $1.5M to move trash
The provincial government is reviewing a request to subsidize the cost of trucking garbage from western Newfoundland to a new regional dump in central Newfoundland.
The Western Waste Management Committee estimates $1.5 million will be required annually to transport the waste.
Provincial government officials said the request may be accepted
"There is some cost savings there in regards to capital costs and it makes the central waste site more manageable from an operational position," said Municipal Affiars Minister Kevin O'Brien.
Despite that, O'Brien said he isn't in a position to make a judgment call yet.
He said the provincial government's review of the request could take a few months.
