Truss company charged over highway death
A renovation company in Lethbridge has been charged with violations under the occupation health and safety act and regulations in relation to a fatal accident two years ago.
Douglas Hancock, 60, was cycling on the Bonavista Highway in Sept. 2011 when roof trusses that were sticking out from the side of a passing truck hit him.
Hancock was the treasurer of the Anglican Church in the small community of Brooklyn.
Eastern Roof and Floor Truss Manufacturing's truck was en route to a work site in Clarenville at the time of the accident.
The company has been charged with failing to protect those not employed by Eastern Roof and Floor Truss Manufacturing. A company supervisor was also charged with knowingly permitting a worker to operate mobile equipment which could create an undue hazard to the health of safety of a person.
The company and supervisor are scheduled to appear in provincial court in Clarenville on Sept. 19.
The RCMP did investigate the matter, but never laid any charges.
