An eastern Newfoundland man made his National Hockey League debut with the Ottawa Senators in New Jersey Tuesday night.

Colin Greening, 24, spoke about playing in the big league on Sportsnet between periods.

"It felt great," he said. "Obviously, was a little bit nervous to begin with but once you get out there, I think I was able to throw a hit in the first shift so, that kind of helped a little bit."

Greening, who grew up in St. John's, said he was delighted to have his parents in the audience for his first NHL game.

"It means everything to me," he said.

"When I was five, they were the first ones that kind of ingrained it in my mind that if I worked hard, some day I could make it to the NHL, and now for them to be here is great for them because it shows the amount of sacrifice they put in for me as well."

Greening was not able to score a point in the game. New Jersey defeated Ottawa 2-1.
