The head of the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has stepped down so he can help the provincial Progressive Conservative Party in the upcoming election campaign.

Len Simms, a former PC leader and a minister in former premier Brian Peckford’s cabinet, represented the Grand Falls-Windsor area in the legislature between 1979 and 1995.

Former premier Danny Williams appointed him head of the NLHC in 2005, a role he left in 2007 to help Williams get re-elected.

He was reappointed to the position after the election, a move that critics decried as 'obscene' patronage.

Senior public servants must quit their jobs if they take part in election activities.
