Second Fogo Island ferry added
Fogo Island will be getting a dedicated ferry service for the peak of its summer season.
The change was announced Thursday, with the Department of Transportation and Works announcing it will temporarily add a second ferry to the Fogo Island run.
The MV Nonia will now be running the Change Islands-Fogo Island service from Farewell, allowing the MV Capt. Earl M. Winsor to offer a dedicated service to Fogo Island, Minister Tom Hedderson said.
"We have noticed increased demand during this period and we are adding a second vessel to help ensure a smoother flow of traffic," Hedderson said in a statement.
Residents of the area had been seeking relief for long waits for ferry service to Fogo Island, which has picked up extra tourist traffic with the opening of new arts facilities.
The added ferry is good news for Isles of Notre Dame MHA Derrick Dalley, who said added ferry service — which will run through the middle of August — would help local festivals.
"Capacity becomes an issue on this ferry service during these periods each summer and I am pleased we are able to bring a second vessel into service to help accommodate the traffic demand," he said.
"This initiative should lead to an even more successful summer festival season."
