Process for upcoming byelections not followed properly

Provincial officials are trying to fix an error in procedures leading up to two byelections later in November.

All 3 parties have agreed to amend Elections Act to validate byelections

Provincial officials are trying to fix an error in procedures leading up to two byelections later in November.

In a release sent out on Friday, the province advised there was a procedural error in the process for the upcoming byelections in Trinity-Bay de Verde and Humber East.

The province said there should be no impact on the dates for the byelections scheduled for Nov. 25.

When the provincial government calls a byelection, there are a number of administrative steps that must be taken. One of the steps included is posting a notice in the Newfoundland and Labrador Gazette.

However, due to an administrative error it was not posted until the following day.

All parties have agreed to change the Elections Act to validate the byelections.

The province will introduce the amendment to the legislation in the House of Assembly when it opens later this month.
