Power normalizing on island following severe wind gusts

High winds blasted Newfoundland on Saturday morning, causing power outages to parts of the island.

Newfoundland Power reported outages and service interruptions in areas of St. John's, Mount Pearl, Torbay as well as in Lewisporte.

A weather station in Cape Pine registered winds gusting at 138 km/h at around 8:40 Saturday morning.

Downed power lines on Torbay Road near the Jack Byrne Arena forced the closure of the road. The Town of Torbay advised residents to use Middle Cove or an alternate route.

A section of roof over apartments in Churchill Square was blown off, blocking a laneway. A tree was blown down in the area, blocking part of nearby Pine Bud Avenue.

Homeowners have lost pieces of roofing and siding in the gusts in St. John's.

Memorial University closed the pedway, connecting the Field House and Aquarena due to high winds.

Marine Atlantic also pushed back its crossing times between North Sydney, N.S. and Port aux Basques.

Passengers booked to cross from Port aux Basques at 11:45 a.m. would depart at 2 p.m., while customers departing from North Sydney left at 10 a.m. ahead of their scheduled 11:45 a.m. sailing time.

Marine Atlantic said the 11:45 p.m. crossings for Saturday have been cancelled, and due to forecasted high winds on Sunday, ferry sailings may be impacted.

Some flights at St. John's International Airport were delayed, but operations were otherwise not impacted.
