The RCMP in Placentia have rescued 24 cats from a house in Fox Harbour under the Animal Health and Protection Act.

Police and the St. John's SPCA entered the home on June 21 and found the cats in "various degrees of distress."

Several were emaciated, dehydrated and covered with fleas, police said in a news release.

The home "was found to be in deplorable condition."

The cats have been turned over to the St. John's SPCA, where they are being treated.

Police said charges are pending, adding they won't be releasing the owner's name at this time.
