Oxfam can't afford to keep St. John's office
Top official says the organization is in dire financial condition
A top Oxfam official was in St. John's Tuesday night to explain why the organization is closing its office in the provincial capital.
"I want to be really frank with you and honest with you," said Oxfam’s national executive director Robert Fox. "The amount of money we raised in Newfoundland and Labrador in a given year is less than the cost of our offices in Newfoundland and Labrador."
Fox said with government cuts and years of million-dollar deficits, Oxfam is having trouble meeting its mandate to help the poor at home and abroad.
He said donations have declined and the organization has to cut overhead costs.
