A fire broke out in a generator on the offshore oil production SeaRose FPSO hundreds of kilometres east of St. John's earlier today.

No one was injured by the fire at about 4:30 a.m., according to a Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board bulletin.

Looking through a view porthole, workers on the SeaRose observed smoke and a small fire within the area enclosing the generator, said the C-NLOPB. The generator was turned off and the ship's fire suppression system immediately doused the flames.

A general platform alarm was sounded at the time of the incident, but the board said operations have since returned to normal.

The petroleum board said Husky is investigating how the fire started.
