Night vision gear fails to locate U.S. hunter

Police have called off the search for Indiana resident William Oberkiser.

Police in western Newfoundland have called off the search for Indiana resident William Oberkiser, after a helicopter crew using night vision equipment failed to find any sign of the missing hunter.

Oberkiser, 65, was reported missing after his truck was found Oct. 9 grounded on a tree stump along an unpaved path about 15 kilometres from the Trans-Canada Highway.

Police, a volunteer search team and a military Cormorant helicopter returned to the area near the start of the Burgeo highway on Thursday after hunters reported hearing a voice in the distance.

RCMP said unless they get new information, the search will resume later in the fall, once trees have lost their foliage.
