Newfoundlander turns hero in Afghanistan

A Newfoundland soldier was recommended for a bravery medal Thursday after an incident in Afghanistan last week.

Lt. Kyle Strong of Manuels was in the rear of a helicopter when he helped save the life of another soldier.

The soldiers were being ferried by chopper to a mountainside, as part of a Canadian-led offensive.

The helicopter landed, but the ground gave way and it had to lift off again quickly.

One soldier was left dangling out the back. Strong saved him when he grabbed onto the man's rucksack.

Strong's parents, Melvin and Catherine, said they are proud of their son, but worried about his safety.
