MP denied tour of Gander air base
Ryan Cleary, NDP MP for St. John's South-Mount Pearl, says he doesn't know why he's not allowed to tour the federal 9-Wing Gander air force base.
Cleary said a senior official at the base invited him for a tour, but when he submitted the request to Ottawa, it was turned down. He blames Defence Minister Peter McKay for blocking him, and said he was told only MPs from the riding are allowed to tour the base.
"I don't know why he turned me down. I can only assume that it's politics," he said. "I've been too much of a critic in the past and they want to shut me down."
Cleary has been a vocal critic of the planned cuts to search and rescue. The Gander base is home to the province's search and rescue helicopters.
