Man rescued from Kippens garage fire by neighbours

The town manager says the man was taken to hospital and was last reported in stable condition, but the garage and two vehicles inside were destroyed.

A man is in hospital after the garage next to his Kippens home was destroyed by fire Monday night.

The Kippens Volunteer Fire Department and Bay St. George RCMP responded to the fire around 6:30 p.m.

Ross Ryan, the town manager in Kippens, says neighbours were able to rescue the man from the burning structure and he was later taken to hospital in Stephenville.

Ryan said at last report the man was in stable condition. Meanwhile, the man's garage and two vehicles inside were "pretty much destroyed" by the blaze.

"Once the fire department was done cleaning up after putting it out, I drove by and it was basically just timbers left and foundation," he said.

"A couple of vehicles were inside, so they were burned as well."

Ryan said firefighters were struggling against cold temperatures and high winds, which were blowing flames directly at the man's home. However, they were able to stop the fire from spreading.

Ryan said firefighters were on the scene for about two hours.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
