Labrador City air quality on par with most of Atlantic Canada

A new report says air quality in the mining town of Labrador City is on par with much of Atlantic Canada.

A new report says air quality in the mining town of Labrador City is on par with much of Atlantic Canada.

The study was commissioned by the Iron Ore Company of Canada and conducted by the environmental company Intrinsik.

Intrinsik tested air for harmful dust particles at six different locations in Labrador City for more than a decade.

Christine Moore, a spokesperson for Intrinsik, said levels of particles such as sulphur and nitrogen dioxide are low.

"For the substances that are very small, and have the potential to enter your lungs, actually the concentrations are very reasonable, very acceptable, when we look at standards from a variety of different jurisdictions," said Moore.

The study also indicated that larger dust particles - ones residents would be able to see floating in the air - are too big to be inhaled.
