For the first time in its 78-year history, a woman has been elected as chair of the Mining Association of Canada.

Effective Wednesday, Zoe Yujnovich replaces Ian Pearce, former CEO of Xstrata Nickel.

Yujnovich is president and CEO of the Iron Ore Company of Canada.

Yujnovich began her mining career in Australia with Rio Tinto in 1996 as a process and development engineer, later serving as president of Rio Tinto in Brazil in 2008, until her appointment to IOC in 2009.

Based out of Montreal, she had served as vice-chair of the association since 2010.

The Mining Association of Canada is the national organization for the Canadian mining industry. Its members account for most of Canada's production of base and precious metals, uranium, diamonds, metallurgical coal, mined oil sands and industrial minerals.
