A man walking on the trails around Signal Hill in St. John's had to be rescued Sunday afternoon.

Shift Supt. Robert Fowler, with the St. John's Regional Fire Department, said the man got lost on one of the trails near Cabot Tower, but rescue officials had trouble locating him.

When they were able to reach the man, 32, on his cell phone, they discovered he was actually on the west side of Cuckold's Cove, near Quidi Vidi.

"Given the temperatures and that today, we were very concerned for him," Fowler said.

"So we got our high angle rescue team from the St. John's Regional Fire Department to come down. And our guys went up, along with representatives from Eastern Health and the RNC, got up there and treated him."

The hiker had sustained minor injuries.

Fowler said once the man was treated, he was safely escorted down the icy hill.
