New Democratic Party MP Jack Harris is reacting to a newspaper report claiming the federal government is considering closing some Canadian military bases, including 5 Wing in Goose Bay.

The Ottawa Citizen has reported that the Department of National Defence plans to sell off property and close bases to save money.

A Liberal Senator was quoted in the paper’s story saying the Labrador air base should close because it's become redundant.

Harris stood in the House of Commons in Ottawa to argue that the base is important to Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy.

"CFB Goose Bay contributes over $75 million to Newfoundland and Labrador's gross domestic product, and 5 Wing Goose Bay has served our country with distinction with its strategic northern location," said Harris, the MP for St. John's East.

In response to Harris's question, Defence Minister Peter MacKay said Newfoundland and Labrador’s federal cabinet minister Peter Penashue is lobbying hard to protect the base.

"The new member from Newfoundland and Labrador that is now sitting as part of the federal cabinet in the Conservative government has made incredible efforts to ensure that we continue to make these historic efforts in Gander and Goose Bay, and across the country," MacKay told the House.
