Harbour Grace addiction centre delayed

The opening of an adult drug addiction treatment centre planned for the eastern Newfoundland community of Harbour Grace has been delayed.

The opening of an adult drug addiction treatment centre planned for the eastern Newfoundland community of Harbour Grace has been delayed.

Consultants bidding on related work were told in July that the government had cancelled its call for proposals to design treatment programs for the centre.

Health Minister Jerome Kennedy said Tuesday that a new request for proposals will be written soon. He said the new request will ask for more involvement from consultants.

"One of the reasons we went to an outside consultant in the first place was to ensure that best practices throughout the country would be incorporated into the planning and the management of the new addictions centre in Harbour Grace," Kennedy said.

He said restarting the proposal process may set the centre's opening back by one to two months.

The centre is expected to cost  $2 million.

Kennedy said the provincial government is still fully committed to the project.
