Provincial politicians were in Buchans on Thursday to announce funding for the community to repair an outdoor pool that people haven't been able to use for three years.

Kevin O'Brien, minister of Municipal Affairs, announced $144,000 for the community to make the necessary repairs to the pool.

There are a lot of serious problems that need attention, such as a badly leaking lining.

Ashley Somers, a former member of the local swim team, said the current state of the facility is a shock to her.

"It's actually insane to see the difference of how we grew up here, the damage that's done, and how much needs to be fixed," Somers said. "It's quite sad, actually, for me and the rest of the town."

Buchans Mayor Derm Corbett said seeing the pool go unused for that amount of time was difficult for him.

"It was rough for me… to see kids pass by, back and forth, back and forth, walking by that pool and peeping through the fence, and just knowing that it wasn't available to them," he said.

Engineering work has already started, and the town is aiming for construction to begin in September.

The goal is to have the pool ready for June 2014 so the pool can stay open all summer.
