Fogo ferry users stock up before Winsor refit

Residents of Fogo and Change Islands are bracing for another disruption in ferry service.

Residents of Fogo and Change Islands are bracing, and stocking up, for another disruption in their ferry service.

The Captain Earl. W. Winsor will be leaving the run for refit in late September.

Gerald McKenna, chair of the Fogo and Change Islands transportation committee, said the Beaumont Hamel and the Sound of Islay will be filling in for the Winsor.

McKenna said the change will cut ship capacity in half.

People who live on the islands are preparing for the Winsor's departure by stocking up on supplies.

"The highway [workers] have started to take in their sand and salt for their winter operations early to get that part of it over with," McKenna said.

"Anything that can be done prior to Winsor's departure will be taken care of before she leaves."

The Department of Transportation and Works said the refit work will take up to four months.
