Fire ripped through an abandoned home on Bell Island early Monday morning, and police are investigating to determine if this is yet another case of a suspicious fire in Wabana. .

Mayor Gary Gosine said the older home, located in the centre of the town, had been vacant for some time.

According to the mayor, this is also the second time the home has been on fire — but this time, the home was destroyed.

Gosine said a neighbour informed him that some of the owner's heirlooms had been recently taken out of the home.

"I was glad to hear that, but now the house is gone and the land part of it will be up on public auction."

Bell Island has seen a number of suspicious fires in recent years but Gosine said there haven't been any instances of arson in the last six months.

"We just hope that there was no one that caught that [on fire]," Gosine said, adding there was no electricity connected to the home at the time.

"If it was, an investigation is on the go and hopefully they'll be caught."
