Crews needed nine hours to extinguish a fire that struck an apartment complex on Newfoundland's southwest coast early Monday.

All residents of the 12-unit complex in Port aux Basques were outside the building as firefighters arrived around 1 a.m., chief Jerry Musseau said.

Musseau told CBC News he needed to call in crews from other communities to help fight the blaze on Grandview Crescent.

"That fire was burning for probably three and a half hours or so before I could see that we were starting to take control of it, but it took another about three hours, four hours, to really get it all out," he said.

After that, crews needed to work on hot spots.

RCMP said the resident of the apartment where the fire started notified all of the other residents, and everyone was able to escape without injury.

Police are investigating, although Musseau said it appears that the fire started in the living room of one of the units.
