Fire destroys grocery store for second time

A grocery store on Newfoundland's south coast was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning, for the second time in just a few years.

A grocery store on Newfoundland's south coast was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning, for the second time in just a few years.

The fire at the Hermitage Valufoods started overnight, with members of the Sandyville-Hermitage fire department called to the scene around 1 a.m.

"It's a total loss. The store's gone," said Fire Chief Dennis Simms.

"We saved more of the structure this time, as compared to before. The floor didn't cave in or nothing. But other than that, it's pretty bad."

Fire crews from Seal Cove and Harbour Breton helped extinguish the fire.

Some nearby houses were evacuated while the fire was being fought, but no one was injured.

The store, one of two in Hermitage, was rebuilt after a fire destroyed it about three years ago.
