A heritage home in downtown St. John's was damaged by fire Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to 51 Rennies Mill Rd. shortly after 3 p.m.

They arrived to find smoke coming from a top-floor apartment.
Deputy Fire Chief Don Byrne said investigators are still trying to figure out if the fire was connected to renovations happening at the time. (CBC)

One man was home at the time, but he got out safely before fire crews got there.

Deputy Fire Chief Don Byrne said crews are looking at whether the fire is related to roof work on the house.

"There was construction going on here," he said.

"To the extent of the construction I can't tell you, but we will discern that through further investigations," he said.

There was extensive damage to the top floor of the house.
