Falling container kills shrimp fisherman

A fisherman was killed off Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula on Monday when a massive container filled with shrimp fell on him.

A fisherman was killed off Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula on Monday when a massive container filled with shrimp fell on him.

The man, 57, was cleaning the deck of the MV Krista Kaye about 20 kilometres off Port au Choix, on the island's west coast when the incident happened Monday afternoon, RCMP said.

The man lived in Anchor Point.

Roland Genge, the deputy mayor of Anchor Point, estimated the box — which by itself weighs about 650 kilograms — was holding about three tonnes of shrimp.

"Better chance now of winning the lottery than that happening again, probably, right. That's how unlucky he was," Genge told CBC News Tuesday.

Four people were aboard the vessel at the time.

Genge said the man was married with two grown children.

Const. Scott Hynes, who works with the RCMP's Port Saunders detachment, said there was nothing suspicious about the incident, and that the weather at the time was fine.
