An intoxicated man who allegedly stole beer from a St. John's store and tried to drive away was arrested early Monday morning.

Just before 1 a.m., the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was called about a man stealing a case of beer from an east end store.

The man left the store with the beer and tried to drive away, but a concerned woman stopped him by reaching into the car and shutting off the engine.

Before the man was able to start the car and leave, officers arrived on scene and arrested him.

He's been charged with theft under $5,000, refusing a breathalyzer and breaching a court order.

The man, 46, was held in custody overnight for an appearance at provincial court in St. John's Monday morning.
