Crews fighting central Newfoundland fire
A large forest fire is burning in central Newfoundland, about 10 kilometres outside Buchans.
Firefighters and a water bomber battled the blaze near the community Wednesday and were returning to the scene Thursday.
Hot, dry and windy conditions in the area caused the fire to spread quickly.
As of late Wednesday, the fire was estimated to be about four kilometres wide.
Southerly winds were blowing flames away from the community Thursday morning.
The forecast is calling for hot and dry conditions for the rest of the week.
Meanwhile in Labrador, eight new fires were reported Wednesday.
Fire crews were focussing on four priority fires. Provincial fire officials said Thursday morning that the fire near North West River was still burning out of control.
