St. John's city council has approved a sand quarry that borders a neighbouring town despite complaints from nearby residents.

The site is in the backyard of Conception Bay South and is near homes and two schools, however it's within the boundary of St. John's.

Some residents who live near the Foxtrap Access Road have been strongly opposed to the quarry.

The quarry was approved at Monday night's council meeting.

The city said quarry operators must follow strict rules and operate only in the summer when the schools are empty.
