Labrador MP Peter Penashue suggested Tuesday that Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay may be receiving good news, rather than closing.

Penashue was responding to an article in the Ottawa Citizen earlier this week that raised fears that the central Labrador base may be on the chopping block as the department of National Defence looks for ways to save money.

A Liberal Senator was quoted in the paper’s story saying 5 Wing Goose Bay should close because it has become redundant.

Penashue hinted that won’t happen.

"There has been a lot of interest and people are looking at how to expand 5 Wing Goose Bay," he said. "There's going to be more stuff happening and so I think I'll have to say: stay tuned," he said.

During the federal election Penashue said Prime Minister Stephen Harper told him the federal government won't shut down the base.
