Cause of Labrador City fire unknown
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers say they may never know what caused a fire that destroyed a new apartment complex in Labrador City.
The blaze broke out early on Nov. 4, and engulfed the building just weeks before it was due to open.
Investigators can't say what caused the fire because of the extent of the damage, but did note there's no evidence to suggest it was arson.
There's no word from the building's owner if he will try to rebuild the complex, which would have added more than 100 apartments that were badly needed for the region.
Government watching housing crunch
Nick McGrath, the MHA for Labrador West, said government is keeping a close eye on the housing crunch in the area.
He said the province is working with organizations like the Housing and Homelessness Coalition in the wake of the fire.
"It's very difficult for government to come in and put houses up right away, but we work as much as we can with the different organizations involved to try and alleviate the difficulties that are there as much as we can," he said.
