The fire broke out around 9 p.m.

Cartwright Mayor Dwight Lethbridge and the RCMP said they believe two people perished in the fire.

Lethbridge said the house was engulfed in flames by the time volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene.

"It was far beyond saving," he said. "It's just a very tough circumstance."

There's no fire hydrant in the neighbourhood, and volunteer firefighters were stuck when they arrived at the scene.

To get them water, some people in the community drilled a hole in the harbour ice to douse the flames.

The names of the two people who died haven't been released, but they were husband and wife, in their late 60s or early 70s.
