Arson suspected in Kelligrews fire
A fire that destroyed an abandoned building in a town near St. John's Sunday is now being considered arson.
The fire at the old St. Alban's school in Kelligrews, Conception Bay South, was reported shortly before 5 p.m.
Police said there was evidence that someone deliberately set the fire that destroyed the old school. Footprints were found near one of the doorways and witnesses reported seeing someone around the building just before the fire broke out.
Fire chief Todd Brophy said the building could not be saved.
"The building was fully involved so we assumed a defensive posture, fought and controlled the fire from the exterior. We didn't send anybody inside," he said Sunday.
Nearby homes were evacuated and the Conception Bay South highway was closed for a while.
No one was injured.
