Former longtime Dieppe mayor and Memramcook MLA William (Bill) Malenfant has died. He was 87.

Former longtime Dieppe mayor and Memramcook MLA William (Bill) Malenfant has died. He was 87.

Malenfant, who served as mayor for 21 years, is often credited with the Dieppe area's renaissance as a francophone cultural, educational and business hub.

A book of condolences is available at Dieppe City Hall for members of the public to sign.

Malenfant was "highly dedicated to his community, serving in various capacities throughout his life," Premier Brian Gallant said in a statement on Friday.

"A well-respected member of the community, he will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him."

Malenfant was first elected to council in 1969 and became mayor two years later.

In 1974, he became the Liberal MLA for Memramcook and was re-elected in 1978.

Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor posted a message on Facebook, saying she was "deeply saddened" to learn of the the death of her "good friend."

"I'm glad I had the opportunity to see him one last time last Friday at the hospital while we spent some beautiful moments together," she wrote.

Malenfant worked "very hard" during his lengthy political career and "contributed largely to lay the foundations of the great success that …  this region [knows] today," wrote Petitpas Taylor.
