Saint John inn catches fire

The Inn on the Cove in Saint John, N.B., has been badly damaged after it caught fire on Sunday.

The Inn on the Cove and Spa in Saint John, N.B., caught fire on Sunday.

District Chief Eric Garland said crews were called to a "major structure fire" at 2:41 p.m.

"Crews arrived on scene to find the building heavily involved in fire," he said. "The structure has received heavy damage, in particular to the upper floor and roof area in the main portion of the building."

No one was injured, he said, and it did not appear that anyone was staying or working at the inn when the fire struck.

Up to 25 firefighters tackled the blaze and some remained on site as of 7 p.m. putting out spot fires.

Garland said the inn was badly damaged.

"It's not in very good shape. Basically the roof is burnt off it," he said. "It has received heavy, heavy fire damage to the upper floor, as well as some smoke damage and some fire damage to the lower floors."

Garland said investigators are on the scene and will likely continue their work on Monday. He did not yet know what caused the fire.
