RCMP seized 350,000 contraband cigarettes in two traffic stops on the Trans-Canada Highway in New Brunswick last week.

The first vehicle was stopped at about 2 p.m. Friday and 200,000 cigarettes were discovered, police said Monday. A 46-year-old Quebec man was arrested and later released. He's due in Grand Falls Provincial court June 14.

A second vehicle was stopped Friday evening in Saint-Jacques, N.B., resulting in the seizure of 150,000 contraband cigarettes. A 66-year-old man from Nova Scotia was arrested and later released. He is scheduled to appear in Edmundston Provincial Court on June 5.

In both cases, the cigarettes and the vehicles used to transport them were seized and will be forfeited to the Crown. Investigators believe all of the cigarettes were destined for the Halifax area.

RCMP did not say if they thought the cases were related.
