Organic farm for food, fish, ducks proposed for Grand Lake

A Fredericton math professor believes he's found the way to farm organic vegetables, ducks and fish year-round in New Brunswick.

Bahram Rangipour says it can be done for a fraction of the cost of conventional farming.

Rangipour has registered for an environmental impact assessment on a property near east Grand Lake and plans to build a one-acre, controlled environment, indoor facility that he says will produce zero waste.

Rangipour says the facility will have no odour and will be stingy on water.

"We do not need and we do not use groundwater," said Rangipour. 

"Only rainwater suffices for us."

A document filed with the Department of Environment and Local Government says rainwater will be collected and stored in a reserve pond on the 10-hectare property.

A key feature in the plan is a bioreactor that will convert duck and fish waste into heat, among other things.

Used car tires are to be baled into blocks to insulate fish ponds.

Wind and solar energy have big roles to play in the facility's operation.

Rangipour believes his farm can raise 3,000 Pekin ducks, duck eggs, a variety of vegetables and 30,000 tilapia annually.

He said he can have it operational for about $500,000.

Rangipour plans to launch a pilot project this year that will produce some ducks and fish by next May.

Rangipour is looking for investors in what he says will be a not-for-profit company. The company name, OSAFE, stands for Organic and Sustainable Atlantic Food and Energy.
